Mission Statement
The Library is an essential part of the
learning experience for students at California State University San
Marcos. Through instructionally-related
exhibits, the Context: Library Series
supports student learning by providing access to a variety of
viewpoints and experiences, and by inspiring research and dialogue
related to each installation.
Student Learning
For students, academic literature and scientific studies go
hand in hand with social, cultural, and visual stimuli—the
context of the world around them.
Each Context
exhibit connects to interdisciplinary curriculum,
facilitating student engagement and understanding of concepts
learned in class.
For example, while learning theories of race and ethnic relations, students experienced the raw visual power of the
Lynching in America
(Fall 2004) installation and the history of African Americans in the United States.
Context
exposes students to new ways of experiencing the world.
Students from
History and Political Science classes wrote papers examining the
Veterans (Fall 2006) exhibit featuring black and white
photographs from the Vietnam War. Large photo murals of bacteria,
algae, and fungi (Growth and Change, Spring 2006) supported
curriculum in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Sociology,
Psychology, and
Education courses connected artwork created by low-income and
welfare children (Through the Eyes of Children: Lives in Poverty,
Fall 2007) to their class readings and discussion. Context is essential for critical thinking.
The Context: Library Series complements other campus programming
through library and college faculty collaborations, along with other
partners from the university community, to engage students through research, assignments, and discussion related to
each semester’s installation.
This active participation and intellectual engagement in the research and learning process directly furthers the
CSUSM mission statement.
