1. Define your Industry -- Industry Codes
NAIC / SIC
NAIC -- North
American Industrial Code
SIC -- Standard Industry Classification
The SIC or NAIC is a industry classification code assigned to all
industries in the U.S. Its used for company, competitor and
industry research. It is useful because many publications
and databases use the number to group similar companies together. Each company is assigned
one or more codes to group it in an industry type. For example
Starbuck's is classified as 2095 (Roasted coffee), 5441 (candy, nut, and
confection store).

To find Market Share within the
industry by NAICS

Concentration Ratio (CR) for your industry in the US Census:

A high CR means that those companies share a large market share in
the industry--less competitive. A low CR means that the
industry is fragmented.
