Resources for Midterm Paper
Sources for background on country or area
It is always a good idea to find out something about the country before
you get on with your research. This will put the information you do
find into some perspective and allow you to interpret it. There are
several sources of information on countries.
- Country
Watch provides up-to date information and news on the 191 countries
of the world. Includes a key set of political, economic, and business
information.

CIA Fact Book compiles basic information about countries, such
as population, language, religion, etc. This source has a section
on communication that can give you a quick guide.

Cambridge Encyclopedia of... (print source)
Cambridge has excellent coverage of China, India, Latin America and
the Middle East.

Gateways
Several excellent Internet sites are available as gateways to information
on these countries or regions.

Lexis/Nexis
On the CSUSM library
main page you can go to Online Indexes, click on Lexis-Nexis
and then on News. Here you will find access to non-U.S. papers
in English and also non-English language news.

Governmental Sites
Another great source of information is the actual government sites
for the country. Browsing these can lead to specific government policies
or agencies dealing with communication.
Start at Governments
on the WWW for easy access to governmental web sites. This web site
includes a link to broadcasting institutions.

Reviews of films produced overseas
- The Internet Movie Database,
a generally good resource for searching for American movies, also
catalogues foreign-language movies supplying basic information about
the movies and sometimes includes comments and links to reviews
- China:
- The Chinese Cinema Page
provides a wealth of reviews by Shelly Kraicer, a Canadian writer
specializing in Chinese language films, on films produced in Taiwan
and the People's Republic of China.

Radio and TV stations and Newspapers
- The TVRadioWorld web
site has a wealth of information about radio and TV stations around
the world. You also find links to governmental broadcasting agencies.
Keep in mind that not all information will be in English.
- You can search the Radio-Locator
for any country's radio stations, and it will list you the stations
that are in its database, many times even providing a link to the
radio stations homepage.
- If you cannot find a specific country in the
Radio-Locator, you might want to try
Web-Radio.
- Many newspapers have online editions of their print versions online.
A great deal of these newspapers have been indexed in
Thousands of Newspapers on the Net.
