What is the GEL Library Module?

The Library Module will introduce you to the basics of college-level research. The skills you learn during the module will help you for 2 main reasons:

  • specifically, for the final presentation and annotated bibliography you will do for this class.
  • in general, for the papers and projects you will be expected to do
    for the rest of your college career.

  • Finding keywords for your topic
  • Find books using the library catalog
  • Keyword searching v. subject searching
    • In-class activity

 

Class #3 - Oct. 3

Homework #2 - 20 points

  • Find a scholarly article that supports your research topic. Email me (acarr@csusm.edu)the following information by 12:59pm, Oct. 5 or you will not receive credit for this homework assignment.
    • APA citation for the article you found. For help citing using APA style, use this guide. (4 points)
    • What database did you use? (3 points)
    • What keywords or subject headings (descriptors) did you use to find this article? (3 points)
    • How do you know this is a scholarly article? (5 points)
    • How does this article relate to your topic/support your research? (1-2 sentences) (5 points)

 

Class #4 - Oct. 5

  • Searching the web
  • Evaluating websites
    • In-class activity: Find two websites on your topic and evaluate them using the worksheet.

 

Class #5 - Oct. 10

  • Citing your work
  • Plagiarism
    • In-class activity

Homework #3 - 20 points

  • Review section on "Citing and Documenting Sources" from UCLA's Bruin Success with Less Stress website
  • Take "quiz" at end of section
  • At the end of the quiz, you will be asked: "Would you like to email your grade to somebody?"
  • Click  yes and fill out your name & email address, and my name & email address acarr@csusm.edu
