RESEARCH PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS GEL 101 Spring 2004 Dr. Joanne Pedersen Your GEL research project will allow you to explore our model of wellness while researching a local city (see below for a list of local cities and their websites). The class will form five small research teams, with about 7 students in each team. Each team will be assigned to a city and use the library module to begin researching that city along the dimensions of community wellness. For example, the “Vista Team” will explore what the city of Vista is doing in the areas education, conservation, recreation, health care, government/politics and culture. During the library module your team will be expected to collect information that is specific to your city as well as general information related to our dimensions of community wellness. Each team member should collect 10 to 15 items. This literature review will form the basis for two things: 1) RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTATION (this is done as a group) 2) ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (this is done individually with each student turning in their own annotated bibliography) 3) RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTATION: Your team will be assigned to a class period (1 hour) to present your findings to the class. Presentations should be creative as well as educational. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY INSTRUCTIONS Each student will turn in their own Annotated Bibliography of the readings they collected for the Research Project Presentation. A high quality annotated bibliography will have at least 10 to 15 entries. During the Library Module you will learn how to create an annotated bibliography. An Annotated Bibliography lists each reading in alphabetical order according to the last name of the author. In addition to providing bibliographic details (title, publisher, date, etc.) each listed reading is followed by a paragraph that summarizes and critically evaluates the reading. You must use your own words for this summary and evaluation. Please follow the attached “Help in Writing Annotations” guidelines for writing your annotations. Below is an example of the format to be used when annotating a book. The Library Module will teach you how to use APA Style to cite a variety of materials (e.g. articles for periodicals, web sites). Accuracy in following the bibliographic style shown below and the quality of your summary paragraphs will be factored into your grade. High quality presentations and bibliographies can help students who are on the boarder line between grades. Important Due Dates for the Annotated Bibliography (for maximum # of points, you must participate in ALL of these due dates): 1) 2-26- rough draft due to Melanie Chu for review 2) 3-9- complete draft due for Peer Review during class 3) 5-11- Final version of Annotated Bibliography
