concepts/terms, basic statistical information,
demographic information as well as some historical
perspective.
Search for sources
Conduct a search with one or two concepts central
to your topic
From the result list, click on Modify Search
Limit your results to
the location: Reference.
Focus your topic
Book (aka
monographs) provide overviews of issues and
virtually always have
bibliographies, endnotes, or
footnotes that direct you to other information; including
scholarly articles.
When you find a good source, click on its
Subjects for other items on that topic.
Go
to the book shelves and browse the call number area
for more materials.
Enter the key term for your concept.
Too many? Add another term to describe the

Journal articles
Research studies appear in
scholarly journals. Search the databases below to find
research studies.
Research studies most often take the form of journal
articles and investigate a very specific aspect of a
particular issue.
Once you have a
good overview of your research topic,find and read
journal articles to develop a deeper understanding
of what is known and not known on your topic.
Sociological Abstracts
Provides access to the latest international
findings in theoretical and applied sociology,
social science, and political science.
PsycINFO
Available via EbscoHost: A comprehensive international
database of psychology, covering the academic, research,
and practice literature in psychology from over 45
countries in more than 30 languages. Coverage: 1887→current
ERIC
A national database of education literature, including
reports and journal articles. Coverage: 1966→current
CINAHL
Provides abstracts for articles from 1,700
journals in the fields of nursing and allied
health.
PubMed @ CSUSM
The premier database of world biomedical
literature on clinical medicine and preclinical
research.
Social Services Abstracts
Abstracts of current research focused on social
work, human services, and related areas,
including social welfare, social policy, and
community development.
