The Circuit partnership is a great resource for either getting a copy of a book that is checked out from the CSUSM Library, or expanding your resource search to include San Diego State, University of San Diego and University of California San Diego.

Getting Started

What do you need?

  • Your CSUSM campus identification card with a library barcode.
    • Don't have an ID card? Check this site for how to get one.
    • Don't have a barcode? Check this site for how to get one.
    • Current semester sticker (available in the library).
  • Access to the CSUSM Library Catalog (available anytime, anywhere)

Have your search strategies mapped out for authors, keywords and subjects, this will make things go faster. If you attended a library resource presentation, look at the Subject and Course Guides page for your class to find specific helps that the librarian mentioned in your class.

When to use Circuit

San Diego Circuit is good for:

  • Finding another copy of a book that has been checked out of the CSUSM Library (not articles)
  • Finding additional materials nearby that may not be held at CSUSM (we have 250,000 titles--the Circuit has about 3,000,000.)

Click on the button Submit search to SDCircuit to automatically search for the item, author or subject that you
had displayed on the screen in the CSUSM catalog,

Note:
Some materials cannot be borrowed due to condition or other lending rules from the library that owns the item. If the material is LOCAL USE ONLY, you will need to go to the owning library for access (remember your CSUSM student ID card!)

Circuit--How long will it take and where do I pick it up?

Normally, this will take 1-3 working days to get the material. There is no delivery service on weekends, so if you are in a real hurry, you may want to drive to the school that owns the work. Take your campus ID with you.

The material delivered to CSUSM will be at the Third Floor Checkout Desk in the Kellogg Library under your name (again, you will need your campus ID.) The material is held for 7 days and then returned to the lender if it has not been picked up by then.

When to use Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan borrows materials from other lenders from all over the world. Due to the workload and shipping issues, this will take more time than Circuit.

  • When using the databases to locate articles, click the Check SFX for Availability button to check our other resources for full text, if full text is not available, an option to order through Interlibrary Loan is made available. Click on the GO button in the GET IT window to start the process.
  • When looking for books, use the Circuit option first as it will be quicker. If the book is not available that way, use the Interlibrary Loan link on the library main page to complete the request form.

Note:
If you have not previously used Interlibrary Loan, you will be asked to complete a short registration process. This is a one-time action (but you will need to update your information if you move or make other changes to your student records.)

ILL--How long will it take and where do I pick it up?

Normally, this will take 5-10 working days to get the material but can take longer. Take your campus ID with you to pick up materials at the Third Floor Checkout Desk in the Kellogg Library (you will need your campus ID). Electronically delivered materials (through your email) may be a faster turnaround.

  • If you requested an article, many times they will be sent to you via email. If not, you will receive an email telling you there is material to pick up.
  • If you requested a book, an email will be sent to you letting you know it has come in and is ready for pickup.
