For this course, your group will be designing an
experiment to test two-point threshold, using one of the
classical methods in psychophysics. Consult your course
materials for details on the assignment.
This guide provides you with methods for searching the
literature for current research that has utilized one of the
classical methods in psychophysics.
Finding journal articles
The topics covered in this course as
well as the topics of your research projects may necessitate
that you look beyond PsycINFO for your information. The
complementary database to use is PubMed. This is the primary
database in biomedical research.
Medline
Also called PubMed; this version has the
same content as PubMed but is much more user-friendly. The premier database of world biomedical
literature on clinical medicine and preclinical
research, from the National Library of Medicine.
PubMed Central
The U.S. National Library of Medicine's
free digital archive of biomedical and
life sciences journal literature. There is
much full-text, but some journals
do not provide most access to most current
issues.
PsycINFO
Available via EbscoHost: A comprehensive
international database of psychology, covering
the academic, research, and practice literature
in psychology from over 45 countries in more
than 30 languages.

Topic overview
Searching the literature via a book or collection of
studies facilitate your research on classical methods in
psychophysics in the current literature.
For example, finding a book that provides an
overview of a sensory modality will provide reviews
of the research.
Consult
tables of contents and indexes to find discussions of
research using the particular method of psychophysics
you are interested in.
Most academic
books have bibliographies that direct you to other
resources and journal
articles.
- If we don't have an item you can request it through

- Enter the key term for your concept.
- Too many? Add another term to describe the
particular issue: teenage pregnancy--united states
- Too few? Search

- When you find a good source, click on its "Subject
Headings" for other items on that topic.
Citing your information
For this course,
you are to cite information using APA Style. The library has
several copies of the most current, 5th edition, but most do
not circulate.

Psychological Association. 5th ed.

Below are some web sites that provide examples.

The OWL (Online Writing Lab) at Purdue
University provides a myriad of example
of works cited and in-text citations.

Produced by the APA, this site contains
a wealth of information about APA citation
style. It is not a replacement for owning
the Publication Manual, though.
