Getting Published:
The Development of an Interactive Game
by Gabriela Sonntag and Donna M. Ohr

Developed for use with the GEL 101 "The Student, the University, the Community," Getting Published is a web site that teaches students how to research and publish a scholarly article. Students are guided through the process of researching a topic culminating in a research paper using standards similar to ones required for authors submitting a manuscript for publication. The students ultimately publish their papers in one of the electronic journals created for the class (Information 2000, Wellness Journal, etc.) Students are required to abstract their articles and input descriptors forming the index to the various journals. Students become published authors and experienced indexers.

By using "Getting Published" students develop an understanding of the following:

  • Process for submitting a paper in electronic format to a scholarly journal.
  • Process by which a scholar becomes published, including editorial boards and refereed publications.
  • Peer review process.
  • Writing of abstracts and annotated bibliographies.
  • Use of a thesaurus.
  • Indexing a paper and use of indexing terms.
  • Key concepts behind database searching.
  • Search strategy in an electronic index.
