Sources for US, State, and Local Election Information

Many sites provide election information, both from non-biased and special-interest organizations. Below are listed some of each with annotations to help you be aware of what you are looking at.

General Election Information

GODORT Federal Documents Task Force Elections Site--a comprehensive collection of web sites with information on Federal level elections and organizations

Elections 2004--site based at University of Michigan's Document Center, this provides many of the same links as the GODORT site with a large section on policy issues.

Election Reform Report--The full report made by the National Commission on Federal Election Reform including recommendations. This commission, headed by former Presidents Carter and Ford,  was formed after the 2000 National elections under the sponsorship of two private organizations.

2005 Elections--This site assembles limited summaries and results from gubernatorial, mayoral, and initiative ballots taking place across the country in 2005. The summaries are delivered in a somewhat entertaining and less than scholarly format, but sample checks of information proved accurate.

International Elections

Election Resources on the Internet/Recursos Electorales en la Internet--Created and maintained by an individual through personal interest, this site offers a Spanish language version as well as expands to local election information when available.

ElectionGuide.org--information on elections at national level in other nations, collected by a nonpartisan organization since 1998.

National Elections

e-democracy--National election news only and has an emphasis on getting involved. Offers links to election humor as well as the serious.

Federal Election Commission: About Elections and Voting--Provides both basic information about elections as well as recent results and voter registration information and statistics.

State Elections--California

CAL-Access--Information on lobbying, campaign finances, and contributions for California elections.

California Secretary of State: Elections and Voter Information--General and specific information on current and previous elections for officials and propositions.

California State University Office of General Council--Handbook on Election Issues--A manual on policy and procedure for the CSU in election activities.

My Vote Counts (California)--A wide variety of information on current California elections, the election process and other resources.

State Elections--Other States

Election 2004--Information on all states for the 2004 election with links to the appropriate state agency (usually Secretary of State or Department of Elections.) The level of information varies, but is the most comprehensive. About.com offers a similar site that includes US possessions such as American Samoa.

Local Elections--San Diego County

Registrar of Voters County of San Diego--Links to current elected officials and representatives and their districts as well as information on candidates and voting procedures.

San Diego County Voter Information--Hosted at SmartVoter.org, part of the League of Women Voters, to help locate voter-specific ballot and candidate and proposition information.

SignOn San Diego--website of the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper, the site offers a mix of links to their news stories and news wires as well as prior election results and city- and county-level races.

City-specific Information

Historical Elections

California Ballot Propositions--Provided by the Los Angeles County Law Library, this provides the ballot information on all propositions since 1884. Note the summaries may NOT be exact transcription as found in the original ballot. A similar resource is provided to the University of California Hastings Law Library Databases for Ballot Propositions and Initiatives beginning with 1911.

Election 2002 Web Archive--a selective collection hosted by the Library of Congress of over 4,000 websites dealing with national and regional elections. There are related websites such as public opinion resources included as well. The capture began July 1, 2002 and covers through November 30, 2002.

Facts for Features: Presidential Election 2004--Basic facts and links gathered by the US Census Bureau on previous elections, the electoral college and participation statistics.

UCLA Libraries Online Campaign Literature Archive--University of California Los Angeles collects, and is now digitizing, campaign literature on state, local, and those national elections which are on the California ballot. This includes capturing any websites related to the candidate or issue.

Vote96.ss.ca.gov, Vote98.ss.ca.gov, Vote2000.ss.ca.gov, Vote2002.ss.ca.gov, and Vote2003.ss.ca.gov are archived sites of California elections from the years noted in their titles. 

Political Parties

Democratic National Committee (John Kerry & John Edwards campaign)

Green Party (David Cobb is their candidate)

Independent Party (Ralph Nader's party for this election)

Libertarian Party (Michael Badnarik is the candidate)

Peace and Freedom (Political party active in California--Leonard Peltier is candidate)

Reform Party (endorses Ralph Nader's candidacy)

Republican National Committee (George W. Bush & Dick Cheney campaign)

Socialist Party USA (Walter Brown and Mary Alice Herbert)

Advocacy Groups & Informational Sites

California Voter Foundation--Describes itself as a non-partisan group to promote the responsible use of technology in the democratic process.

FactCheck.org--Independently-written articles discussing topical issues (currently mostly election claims and counterclaims) with factual research to support the findings. Do NOT confuse this site with BuzzFlash's FactChecker.org site, which does have a liberal bias.

Initiative and Referendum Institute--University of Southern California hosts this site as an educational and research resource for users around the world.

League of Women Voters--Both National and California groups advocate and informed public through political awareness and voter participation. There is a site specifically for the 2004 elections.

Project Vote-Smart--Delivers factual information on candidates' position statements and voting records.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research--archive of opinions gathered by survey researchers with specific collections on elections.
