Search Engines for US Government Information

There are a number of different search engines and directories you can use to find US government information. These are a few of the best for both general and specialized information.

Agency Index
Courtesy of Washburn University School of Law.  A web page for Federal Agencies that provides links to the agencies' homepage, publications, organizational charts, electronic forms and administrative decisions. Often this information can only be found by digging deep into an agency site.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
The electronic version of the discontinued Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications, this site provides additional information such as locations of depository libraries as well as searching federal government materials published since July 1976. Earlier print-only materials should be searched through the print Monthly Catalog.

Federal Web Locator
Brought to you by the Center for Information Law and Policy at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, this site lists all Federal and affiliated sites, including quasi-official organizations such as the Red Cross.

USA.gov
Search engine built by the US government to search only Federal online information.

FedStats
Provides access to statistical data from over 70 federal agencies and the latest White House press briefings.

FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)
Each agency has it's own process and forms for FOIA requests. Here are some agencies' links:

FRASER
Produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis to provide access to digitized print and data for economics researchers. This can be used in conjunction with FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) for current and historical data.

Google's Uncle Sam
This popular search engine's secondary search (google.com/unclesam) limits your searches to servers using the .gov (federal), .mil (military), and state servers (ending with .us or .gov). Smaller entities, such as cities, may not be included if the server domain does not fit the pattern required by Google. Note: Results from Findlaw.com are also included in the results due to the amount of federal legislative information included on their server, but other .com, .org and .net sites are excluded.

GovSpot
Commercial-provided directory that provides access to all levels of world, federal, state and local government.  Includes links to consumer information sites, public opinion polls, election information, and more.

GPO Access
The Federal Register, Congressional Record, Congressional Bills and other Federal Government information are available online via GPO Access, a service of the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). Public access is available through the Federal Depository Library, or directly from GPO. Provides access to the current Guide to U.S. Government Information, also known as MoCat.

GrayLit Network
Search engine for well over 100,000 unclassified scientific technical reports held in databases at NASA, DOE, DOD, and EPA and their sub-agencies. Gray literature is material that is harder to locate as it is not published through normal venues, such as journals or conferences. Some material dates back to 1974.

Infomine (Government Information)
University of California Riverside's Government Information Web Page for searching the UCR collections and resources.

Search Systems' Public Records Locator
This offers the choice to search either free or fee-based databases to public records. You may search by region (recommended) or by keyword.

THOMAS
Access to current and historical (starting with the 93rd Congress in 1973) legislation with links to bill summary (or full text), current status, supporters, voting records and much more.
