A well-known portal for physical and political maps of countries and the United States. Also provides and extensive list of links to other web sites dedicated to maps.

National Geographic MapMachine
The MapMachine web site provides easy-to-print versions of popular world and U.S. maps. The site's 'Dynamic Maps' allow users to zoom in and out of maps.

National Geographic Xpeditions
Produced for an audience of educators, this other National Geographic site provides users with easy to print, black and white maps of various world regions.

Geology.com
A source for world country maps and satellite images.

Maps.com
Provides access to numerous U.S. and world maps. Also a commercial site where one can purchase various maps and other cartographic materials.

gCensus
A project from Stanford University that makes geographic data freely and easily accessible to the public in conjunction with free software from Google Earth.

 

United States

GeoData.gov
A portal to a wide array of U.S. geographic information, including maps and reports.

National Atlas
The U.S. Department of the Interior produces this inter-active atlas that allows you to make customized maps of the United States' physical and socio-cultural characteristics.

Geology.com
A source for state maps, including relief, elevation, drainage, political and road maps.

California

California Geographical Survey
This site provides access to numerous maps of California, individual regions, and counties. Also of note are the numerous maps with statistics on citizens, income, education, and population.

California Coastal Records Project
A photographic aerial survey of the entire California coastline in order to document coastal erosion and development.

Country Information

CountryWatch
CountryWatch provides physical, political, economic, and other types of maps of countries as well as basic facts and statistics, and current news from that country.

Altapedia
This site provides a quick and easy way to get a physical and political map of countries along with basic statistical information.

Maps with Demographic Data

U.S. Census Bureau's Mapping and Cartographic Resources
This site provides direct access the the numerous maps produced by the U.S. Census. This is especially useful if you want a graphical representation of demographic data.

Tiger Map
Also produced by the U.S. Census, this site allows you to produce and manipulate your own maps using U.S. Census information.

Historic Maps

David Rumsey Collection of Maps
This collection of predominantly 18th and 19th century cartographic information requires user to download special software to view the collection. The download is free.

Map Collections: 1500-1999
Produced by the Library of Congress, Map Collections provides access to a portion of their cartographic collection, available for download.

Panoramic Maps
Part of the Library of Congress' Map Collections site, this collection is of the panoramic cartographic form that was used predominantly in the late 19th and earlier 20th century.

Weather

Global Climate Maps
This collection of climate maps produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations provides users with access to global weather information.
