Specific Proposition Advocacy and Information Sites

All Propositions:

Alliance for a Better California--offers opinions on each of the ballot measures.

California Governor's Page--Links to his press releases and speeches, note that these are his opinions, so there is bias.

Institute of Intergovernmental Studies Library at UC Berkely offers Hot Topics pages on several of the propositions.

Proposition 73:

Pro-choice: NARAL Pro-Choice America's page for Young Women provides a link to Who Decides? a state-by-state discussion of abortion rights for young women. CARAL (California chapter) provides fact sheets specific to California.

Pro-life: California Pro-Life Council offers some information for voters specifically focused on California issues. The National Right to Life Organization offers information at the federal level.

Proposition 74: California Teachers Association (CTA) offers their take on the issue of teacher tenure. The California Chamber of Commerce supports this proposition.

Proposition 75: Look at various California union web pages for their take on this issue of more member control of their union's political funding. (examples: SEIU, AFL-CIO). See the Californians for Paycheck Protection for an opposing viewpoint.

Proposition 76: JoinArnold.com (the name says it all) and California Teachers Association offer opposing views of the proposition known as "The Live Within Our Means Act".

Proposition 77: Here is a perfect example of the need to check that you have the latest and authoritative information. The California Superior Court order in July declared the reapportionment proposition invalid (because the version submitted to the California Secretary of State was different than the version being circulated for petition signature.) This decision went to appeal and was upheld by the California Court of Appeals. As of August 12, the California Supreme Court has overruled the invalid status and the proposition is back on the ballot. During all this change, some websites, such as California Voter.org did not update their information with each decision. A blog with discussion and some links is at Bear Flag League Special Election Page. Check various California politicians' websites for their take on this issue (see member lists in the Assembly and Senate).

Propositions 78 & 79: AARP (American Association of Retired Persons--California) offers information on prescription drug costs and availability through their Policy and Research link. Drug producers such as Merck have press releases and justifications for the cost of prescription drugs (see links like "Newsroom" for general press releases or information on subsidized prescriptions.) For an idea of the amounts of money involved, check the Statistical Abstract of the US's "Health and Nutrition Tables". Use the PDF binoculars to search the word 'drug' and note the yearly dollar amounts cited are in billions (yes, with a B) and the increase in per capita expenditures over the years.

Proposition 80: UCAN (Utility Consumers' Action Network) offers information useful to your research on electric service providers in California. San Diego Gas & Electric (Sempra) is the local utility company, check their News & Info link for press releases and other information from the energy-producer's viewpoint.
