Description
‘Umeke’s mission is to preserve and perpetuate the culture and traditions of Hawai'i through intergenerational learning, storytelling, and accessible community programs. Established in 2022 in Oceanside, ‘Umeke promotes arts-based educational efforts as a powerful way to promote awareness and wellness and deepen understanding and empathy.
In April 2025, U-ACT, in partnership with ‘Umeke, hosted the very first ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Language & Performing Arts Workshop, led by Dr. Muāgututi'a. It was an empowering gathering at MiraCosta College—as Dr. Suarez expressed, “Polynesian languages have been met with major resistance with colonial contact. As a university, it is our obligation to give back what was taken, to provide at no cost, when we can, opportunities for communities to reclaim their heritage.”
