Save Our Streets (SOS)
Title
Save Our Streets (SOS)
Description
Save Our Streets Outreach (SOS) was established in 2006 after Oceanside Police Officer Dan Bessant was killed by Sāmoan gang members. SOS is one of two programs under the neighborhood, grassroots non-profit organization, Youth Opportunities Network, Inc. (YON). Through the other program, YON has hosted the annual Oceanside Sāmoan Cultural Celebration for the past 37 years.
Volunteer Program Coordinator of YON and co-founder of SOS, Wayne Godinet, is a respected Sāmoan elder who has been dedicated to reducing community violence by engaging youth through sports and connection to Sāmoan culture to provide healing and safety. Through the Stop the Hate CA program, U-ACT connected SOS with the CA Civil Rights Department to support SOS’s work with the Oceanside community.
