Title

‘Ukarere – Sounds of the Pacific

Description

‘’Ukarere’ (yoo-kah-ray-ray) meaning “jumping foam” or “flying foam,” is in reference to the rapid movement of fingers across the strings. ‘Ukarere’s have two distinct features that set them apart from the Hawaiian ukulele: the opening for acoustics is located in the back of the instrument (instead of the front), and there are six strings set in pairs (instead of four strings). These features, along with the faster pace of strumming, provide a unique, higher-pitch sound to the Hawaiian ukulele.
